5 Ways To Make Your Perfume Last Longer

How often have you faced this problem? You spend hundreds of dollars on an expensive bottle of perfume only to have the scent vanish in an hour or two. Spraying on pulse points seems to be common practice but is that the best way to do it?. I recently sat down with Prachi Saini – the beauty and brains behind Je t’aime Perfumery Singapore – over a cup of coffee to talk about perfumes. Saini was happy to share her knowledge about perfumes, creating your own signature scent and the many steps involved in perfumery.

Here are a few things I learnt about how to make perfume last longer.

1. Be wise when choosing scents
Perfumes are found in different groups. Look out for for descriptions like woody, spicy or oriental as these last longer. Citrus and floral scents, while brighter and more feminine than the above, need to be refreshed more often.

2. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
Fragrance lasts longer on moisturised skin, so make sure you skin is hydrated. You could also use an unscented body oil.

3. Store it well
It’s best to keep your perfume bottles in a cool, dark place away from any humidity. The scents of precious oils become altered when exposed to extreme temperatures. Also, this goes without saying – make sure the lid is on securely!

4. Where to spray
If it’s cold where you are, go ahead and spray perfume directly onto moisturised skin. However, those of us living in the tropics will be better off spraying perfume on our clothes. This is because the perfume spritzed on our skin will evaporate quickly due to our higher body temperature.

5. Layer Fragrances

It’s a good idea to layer fragrances. Start with a scented body wash followed by a body lotion and finally, the perfume. My only warning – don’t layer too many fragrances. Stick to complimentary scents or to be safe, use the same scent. Many companies offer sets such as this so you can’t go wrong.

And there you have it. What is your favourite perfume? We’d love to hear…

And The Most Beautiful Woman Alive Is…

lupitaIn case you haven’t heard already, People magazine just named Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o the Most Beautiful Woman Alive. The gracious actress is excited for the honor because of “all the girls who would see me… and feel a little more seen.”

Known for her flawless skin, you’d think Lupita was simply blessed with good genes. In fact, she says this wasn’t the case and shared with Madame Noire: “Growing up I had really bad skin. I had a skin disorder. Yes, I did. And my mother went to great lengths to try and find something to remedy it. I remember she took a trip to Madagascar and came back with all these alternative, medicinal herbs and stuff. They didn’t smell so good but I think they worked some magic.” Now, she uses lots of natural oils – like avocado oil and Hawaiian kukui oil – and drinks loads of water.

Nail Art For Everyone

OMG! So I absolutely love nail art (who doesn’t?). Though I usually stick to plain colours since the few many attempts I’ve made have all turned out bad. Really bad. But this geometric design is something I can definitely achieve. And in less than 10 mins. I kid you not. How you ask? Simple. They’re actually nail wraps from Scratch. Tempted to go get a pack, aren’t you? Scratch has got many other beautiful options too : )

PS. Fancy white nail polish?

Side Swept Waves

Sandra-Bullock-Oscars-2014jessica-biel-and-kate-hudsonWas it just me or did you notice that many celebrities had the same hairstyle at the recent Oscars? Side swept waves are apparently the rave! And it really does suit the red carpet, don’t you think? It’s just so glamorous. If you’re keen to get the look yourself, watch this step-by-step video.

We saw stars riding the retro wave even at the many after parties.

PS. Another cool hairstyle.

Do You Love: Denim With Denim

jeans-blouse-with-jeans-editedI came across this beautiful picture on Pinterest (the place which causes time to disappear) and found myself actually liking the denim on denim style. Which is strange because I never thought I would. Maybe it’s her relaxed vibe and those red lips that are selling the look but what do you think? Would you wear denim on denim?

My Top 10 Beauty Products For The Face

Much like any other girl, when I step into a drugstore, I usually pick up way more things than needed. It’s just that I love trying out new beauty products. What if this brand works better? And it’s cheaper, too! That’s how it goes in my mind. But over the years, I’ve narrowed down my must-haves. These are the products I rely on and which I go back to time and time again.

Just-For-The-FaceI’ve talked about my absolute love for Burt’s Bees so it’s no surprise that you’ll find three of the five products above are from them. Because I like variety, I alternate between the Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream and Orange Essence Facial Cleanser. Both smell wonderful and do a great job of getting icky make up off! Just before retiring for the day, I use a little of their Sensitive Night Cream (if I remember).

Since it’s sunny in Malaysia all year through, a good sunscreen is pivotal. I use L’Oreal’s UV Perfect which has an SPF 50. The only downside of this sunscreen is that it tends to make my skin look oily after a couple of hours. I’m still on the hunt for the perfect sunscreen (any suggestions?). So if I’m wearing make up, I use a moisturizer by Cetaphil. It’s light – perfect for use under foundation.

And speaking of make up…

MakeUp-FavouritesAs you can see, I’m a tad biased towards MAC. It could be that it was the first make up brand that I used when I started experimenting with eye shadows and lipsticks at 18 but I don’t think that’s the only reason. Since then, I’ve tried various other brands and none of them make me as happy as MAC : ) Now, let’s be clear. I don’t use foundation on a daily basis but when I do, Studio Sculpt is usually what I reach for. Not only does it have SPF 15, it also helps revitalise my dry skin. MAC’s Select Cover-Up is the latest addition to my repertoire of make up products. Though it’s meant to conceal dark circles under the eye, I use it just about anywhere I find a spot or blotch. Super handy! Most days, I skip the foundation and am perfectly content to use MAC’s Studio Careblend Pressed Powder to even out my skin tone.

And of course, one absolutely cannot forget blusher. I wrote about the All In One blusher by Body Shop months ago and am still loving it. I’m not ashamed to admit that I try just about every mascara that comes out. While I still love this one, I received Body Shop’s Big & Curvy mascara as a Christmas gift and must say that it’s doing a fabulous job of creating lush lashes.

So there you have it. My top 10 can’t-live-without, must-have, go-to beauty products for the face.

Beautiful Buns

Forgive me for talking about hair again but lately I find myself pinning an awful lot of gorgeous buns. I’m inspired to try each and every one of these styles. Though I cannot find the tutorials to the exact pictures below, a simple search will give you the steps required. Here are some of my favourites…

How To Get Gorgeous Curly Hair

how-to-get-gorgeous-curly-hairChances are, if you were born with curly hair, frizz is your no. 1 enemy. Welcome to my world! Take joy in the fact that you are not alone. I’ve had a love-hate relationship with my super thick curly hair. Hating it so much as I was growing up that I eventually cut it all off in the hopes of achieving the Halle Berry look. That didn’t quite work out as I had hoped. And then, slowly learning to embrace my curls when I hit my twenties.

Along the way, I’ve learnt a few tricks which help to keep my hair under control. I’m ashamed to say that I don’t follow this routine as closely as I should and still suffer from frizz attack because of my laziness but when I do, the difference it makes to my hair is obvious. So, just in case you’re still in the “I hate my hair!” phase, I thought I’d share my routine with you today.

1. A good oil soak every week helps. I use extra virgin coconut oil. Just slather your hair in the oil, making sure not to miss the ends, then slip on a face mask and watch the latest episode of Glee. An hour later, jump into the shower and…

2. Shampoo your hair well. My old favourite is the Kerastase Bain Oleo-Curl shampoo and conditioner. Focus on the scalp while you’re shampooing (no nails, please) and apply conditioner starting from about an inch away from the roots all the way to the tips of your hair. Don’t worry… I assure you that once you’re done, your hair won’t look greasy from the coconut oil.

3. Never use a towel to dry your hair. Doing this definitely welcomes Mr. Frizz. Instead, wring your hair out in the shower and wrap it up in a cotton t shirt. Also, I stay away from all heat styling tools. That means, no straighteners, curling irons or even a hair dryer. Letting your hair air dry is the best option.

4. Once your hair is 70% dry, apply a good anti frizz product. Currently, I’m into Moroccan Oil Treatment. This thing really works! And to end it all, shape your curls by twirling pieces around a finger. Then, leave your hair alone! I’m often tempted to pull my hair into a ponytail or twist it into a bun as the day goes by but doing so will ruin your curls.

I hope that helps : ) What are your hair care tips and tricks?

Review: NARS Blush

NARS is the ultimate authority in blush. Their blushes are known to give a natural, healthy-looking colour that immediately enlivens the complexion. A light application of even the highest-intensity hues delivers a natural-looking flush. The blushes are of a silky texture and come in matte and shimmering shades.

What I love about NARS is the variety of colours it offers. There is definitely a colour for every skin tone and every occasion. It is also really easy to apply. Just keep in mind that most of their colours are highly pigmented so a little goes a long way. My favourites of the lot are NARS Orgasm, Sin, Day Dream and Deep Throat.

NARS-ORGASMNARS-SINNARS-DAY-DREAMNARS-DEEP-THROATWhen it comes to my makeup routine, there are two things I cannot live without. The first is an eyeliner (this one is great!) and the other is a good blusher. Blush is the fastest and easiest way to give yourself a pick-me-up and brighten up an otherwise dull and pale face. Start by applying blush to the apples of the cheeks. Take what’s left on the brush and sweep across the hairline, bridge of the nose, and the chin. Neutral-tone blushes can also be used to contour and sculpt the skin.

Do you have a favourite NARS blush? If you want to try it out, NARS can be purchased from the 3rd Floor, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. It is retailing at RM120 per blush.
