Photographer Martin Usborne is on a mission to give a voice to animals. He’s traveled around the world visiting zoos, rescue shelters and even a restaurant that served dog meat. From his adventures come a series of photos of dogs staring quietly through car windows, often in the dead of night. The images, though staged (don’t these dogs look like professional models?), stir up a sense of desperation and loneliness. These animals look as though they want to speak. If only they could.
Interestingly, inspiration for these photos came from a very personal experience. “I was once left in a car at a young age. I don’t know when or where or for how long, possibly at the age of four, perhaps outside a supermarket, probably for fifteen minutes only. The details don’t matter. The point is that I wondered if anyone would come back. The fear I felt was strong: in a child’s mind it is possible to be alone forever,” he recalls on his website.
What do you think of these powerful images and the message behind them?
