“Gene has always been rather selfish when it comes to food. It is not that he will never share his food, but rather he will not serve anyone food that he would not eat himself. “
Selfish Gene Café presents its customers with the perfect setting to enjoy a cup of joe with it minimal, unpretentious décor. We stumbled upon this gem on a beautiful Sunday morning as we walked along this quiet street. Here lay a quaint café whose name appealed to us.
We walked through its slim doors and were greeted by concrete floors and chalkboards adorned with simple drawings. There was definitely something soothing and welcoming about the place.
The café offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, homemade baked goods and coffee. The food served is mostly made from scratch when you order and is reasonably-priced. You can sink your teeth in a roasted beef sandwich for $12.80, while the delicious-looking scrambled eggs on brioche and salmon bagel came at just $10.80. Breakfast is served from 10 am to 4 pm.
Sadly, we did not manage to grab breakfast as we were meeting some friends for brunch. But we desperately needed our caffeine fix and ordered a glass of latte and a flat white at the counter. The bill set us back $9.60.
The coffee beans used were from Highlander. I felt that the latte was a tad too milky for my liking as the milky taste slightly overpowered that of the coffee, especially since Highlander beans are known to produce a milder coffee. Having said that, it was still a good cup of joe. The flat white on the other hand was pretty good – light and smooth. If you love a mild tasting coffee with no acidity and bitterness to it, this might just be a perfect place for you. The coffee served is definitely above average.
Having read so many great reviews of the roasted beef sandwich and the cafés’ pastries, I hope to return to give their food a try. Overall, I love the spacious yet cosy atmosphere of the café thanks in large part to the high ceiling and partial glass roof in the middle of the room. It is a lovely place to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon with either a good book in hand or for simply catching up with your friends.
