I saw the latest Dove commercial yesterday and it gave me much to think about. Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? Do we have such a low self-image of ourselves?
In the video, we see FBI-trained forensic artist, Gil Zamora ask seven women to describe themselves as he sketches. He’s seated at a drafting table and never sees his subject. “Tell me about your chin,” he asks gently, “your jaw?” Later, he asks strangers to describe the same women and uses these descriptions to create a second drawing.
It comes as no shock that the final sketches, hung side by side, look completely different. Each woman had a warped image of herself. Each thought they were less beautiful. And each, naturally, had a very strong emotional reaction to the drawings.
How do you see yourself?
